WASHINGTON D.C. — Americans planning holiday errands and travel this week may notice unusual closures as Christmas Eve on Dec. 24 and the day after Christmas on Dec. 26 are designated federal holidays for 2025 only under a presidential order. The move creates a four day holiday stretch for many federal workers while prompting questions about which services will remain available.
Despite the federal holiday designation, mail delivery will continue on both Dec. 24 and Dec. 26, according to the U.S. Postal Service. Post offices are expected to be open on both days, though many locations may operate on reduced or early closing schedules on Christmas Eve. USPS facilities will be closed on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, with no regular mail delivery.
Banks are generally expected to remain open on Christmas Eve and Dec. 26, though some branches may operate with limited hours depending on location and institution. Major banks including Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo have advised customers to check with local branches for specific holiday schedules. Banks will be closed nationwide on Christmas Day, which is a standard federal banking holiday.
